The Association of Optometrists (AOP) is the leading representative membership organisation for optometrists in the United Kingdom. The Association promotes and protects the interests of registered optometrists, whether they are self-employed, employers or employees in the independent or corporate sector. It promotes high standards and the professional and clinical independence of optometry. It advises on the commercial, economic, legal and administrative aspects of practice, and it represents the interests of its members in all appropriate negotiations with national and European authorities. The Association also provides the secretariat of the European Council of Optometry and Optics. The AOP is the voice of the optical profession, representing over 80% of practising optometrists.
