NORTHERN & SHELL ENTERPRISES LIMITED

Northern & Shell was founded in 1974 by Richard Desmond as the publisher of the music magazine International Musician and Recording World. The company expanded into leisure and specialist magazine markets and, by the late seventies, developed a worldwide presence. The group acquired and launched prominent national newspapers and celebrity magazines, including the Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star, and OK! magazine, and added Channel 5 to its media portfolio. In October 2011, Northern & Shell launched The Health Lottery. In 2014, Northern & Shell Ventures was launched as a venture capital investment arm. Following the sale of Channel 5 in 2014 and its print publications in 2018, Northern & Shell transitioned from the media business and is now involved in property development and venture capital, with a focus on projects such as the Westferry Printworks.
