MAX WEBER STIFTUNG DEUTSCHE GEISTESWISSENSCHAFTLICHE INSTITUTE IM AUSLAND

The Max Weber Stiftung (MWS) is a major supporter of German humanities research abroad. It maintains ten scientifically autonomous institutes worldwide that serve as a bridge between the host countries and Germany. Established by law of the German Bundestag on June 20, 2002, the foundation has an annual budget of approximately 48 million euros (2024). It is one of the ten largest German foundations under public law and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The MWS promotes research with a focus on the humanities, social sciences, and cultural sciences. The institutes contribute significantly to understanding and networking between Germany and the host countries/regions. The MWS is committed to the principle of the unity of research and teaching and the principles of Open Access. The foundation's organs are the Board of Trustees, the directors of the institutes, and the scientific advisory boards of the institutes.
