The Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI) was established in 1968 in the UK to set and maintain standards for the medical illustration profession, bringing together the disciplines of clinical photography, medical art, illustration, graphic design and video within healthcare. IMI introduced the first Diploma in Medical Illustration in this country and in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University, this was validated as the first BSc in Medical Illustration in the world. The Institute provides its members with the umbrella of a Code of Professional Conduct and a Continuing Professional Development scheme, which guarantee employers well qualified and up-to-date staff. In 2017 Medical Illustrators joined The Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS). IMI's major refereed publication, the Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine, is widely recognised as the leading European publication in the field. The charity's activities include promoting and advancing education in all matters connected with medical illustration and any subjects ancillary to or of use or benefit in that profession.
