BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN LEADERS

The British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML) is the professional body in the UK & Ireland for UIMLA International Mountain Leaders. BAIML represents the UK and Ireland at UIMLA, the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations. BAIML works closely with UIMLA to develop and promote a worldwide standard for training and assessment. BAIML is the professional membership organisation in the UK and Ireland for holders of the UIMLA International Mountain Leader (IML) qualification from Mountain Training UK and Ireland (MTUKI), and also for people from other nations who hold a UIMLA IML diploma and become resident in the UK or Ireland. BAIML has approximately 500 members of whom over 300 are fully qualified and active UIMLA IMLs. BAIML is a founding member of the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA). BAIML's aims are to guide and support aspiring International Mountain Leaders as they embark on and progress through the IML qualification pathway; to promote awareness within the trekking industry of the value, skills, and expertise IMLs bring, particularly in ensuring client safety; to assist our members in meeting the ongoing professional standards set by UIMLA; and to represent and advocate for the profession both nationally and internationally. The Purpose of BAIML is: To maintain a suitably qualified and competent corps of International Mountain Leaders (IML) and to promote a high standard of professional service for the clientele in order to promote safety, enjoyment, and good practice in the mountain environment; To provide awareness of the need for conservation, protection and appreciation of the countryside and mountain environment; To provide an opportunity for members to meet and familiarise themselves with new equipment, techniques, and current practices in mountain and wilderness travel; To act on behalf of and in the interests of all members; To strengthen ties with fellow International Mountain Leaders or their equivalent worldwide; To liaise with and take a part in fostering the works of other bodies having a mutual interest and concern with mountaineering and mountain training. BAIML maintains a register of members, which can be used to find a qualified leader or check the credentials of anyone offering services as an IML. BAIML also ensures the delivery of the award in collaboration with stakeholders meets the UIMLA requirements and its members maintain the required professional standards. It manages the issuing of the carnet (licence) to IMLs.
